Ideal for food, culture and wine travellers; pleasantly less crowded than the southeast. Plan 1 day for the town and a winery, 2 days with the salt pans and Mozia. The old town is walkable; for the salt pans, Mozia and wineries a car is useful.

Marsala sits at the westernmost point of Sicily, where the island tapers into the salt lagoon of the Stagnone and the open sea. The name goes back to the Arabic “Mars Allah” (harbour of God), but the town became famous for its wine: in 1773 the English merchant John Woodhouse discovered the local fortified wine and, following the example of port and sherry, added brandy to make it seaworthy. English families such as the Inghams and Whitakers expanded the trade, and from the early 19th century the Florio family joined in and professionalised production.

Today Marsala is above all a relaxed town for food, wine and culture: a bright Baroque old town around Piazza della Repubblica, three large historic wineries on the edge of town, the photogenic salt gardens of the Stagnone and the small island of Mozia with Punic-Phoenician excavations. Anyone looking for wine, history and quiet lagoon scenery, and happy to do without postcard bustle, will feel at home here.

In fairness: Marsala is spread out. The town, the salt pans, the boat landing to Mozia and the wineries are some distance apart – without a car it gets tiring. Tastings at the wineries are almost always only possible by prior booking, and there is little shade and often a stiff breeze at the lagoon.

Quick facts

Location Westernmost tip of Sicily, Province of Trapani; on the Stagnone lagoon

Length of stay 1 day for the town & a winery; 2 days with the salt pans and Mozia

Car Old town on foot; useful for the salt pans, Mozia & wineries

Getting there Trapani-Birgi airport (TPS) nearby; train/bus from Trapani

Best time Spring & autumn; the salt pans glow in the low sun

Good for Wine, food, culture, photography; less suited to pure beach holidays

Highlights Marsala wineries, Stagnone & salt pans, the island of Mozia, old town

Specialities Marsala wine, busiate pasta, fish & seafood

Who is Marsala worth it for? Tastings at the wineries generally require prior booking.

The highlights in detail

Old town with the Cattedrale and Piazza della Repubblica

The historic centre of Marsala is a compact, bright Baroque ensemble centred on the Piazza della Repubblica with the Cattedrale San Tommaso di Canterbury – its dedication recalls the town’s long English presence. From the historic town gate Porta Garibaldi, the old town can be explored on foot in one to two hours, passing churches, small squares and the theatre. The church itself is free to enter; since the centre is compact, it’s worth wandering the lanes without a fixed plan and leaving the car outside the ZTL.

Marsala wineries & tasting

The major houses Florio, Pellegrino and Donnafugata have shaped Marsala wine for around two centuries and sit on the edge of town towards the sea. A tour combines the history of the fortified wine with a look into the historic ageing cellars – the Donnafugata cellars from 1851 are considered an example of industrial archaeology – and usually ends with a tasting of different styles, from a dry aperitif to a sweet dessert wine. Practical point: tastings are almost always by prior booking only, and since the wineries lie outside the centre, driving there is the easiest option.

Saline dello Stagnone

North of the town, the salt gardens with their characteristic windmills stretch across the Stagnone lagoon, where sea salt is still harvested today (for instance around Saline Ettore e Infersa). The grounds can be viewed freely; individual mills and tours are chargeable – one to two hours is enough for an impression. The most honest tip concerns the time of day: at midday it is hot, shadeless and often windy here – late afternoon is far more rewarding, when the shallow ponds reflect the low light and the windmills stand out against it.

Island of Mozia with the Museo Whitaker

In the middle of the lagoon lies the small island of Mozia (San Pantaleo), one of the most important Phoenician-Punic sites in the Mediterranean, with excavations and the Museo Whitaker, which displays, among other things, the marble statue “Giovinetto/Auriga di Mozia”. The island is car-free and can be explored on foot in two to three hours – its appeal lies in the combination of antiquity and quiet lagoon scenery. Mozia can only be reached by a short boat trip from a landing on the lagoon shore. The boat ticket (around €6, children €4, return) is separate from admission to the island and the Museo Whitaker: this is paid on the island itself and currently costs around €10, reduced €6. In the summer season (April to October) the first boat departs around 9:45am and the last returns around 6:30pm; in winter service ends in the early afternoon. Check times and prices before your visit.

Museo Archeologico Baglio Anselmi

The archaeological museum, housed in a former winery baglio at the harbour, features as its centrepiece the wreck of a Punic warship from the First Punic War, recovered off the coast – a rare testament to ancient shipbuilding technique. Admission currently costs €10, reduced €5. There are also finds from Mozia and the surrounding area that round out the historical context. At around an hour, the visit is compact and combines well with a walk through the old town.

Marsala on video

The following videos from external YouTube channels give a first impression of Marsala – from the old town to the Stagnone lagoon.

Marsala 2M21 4KMarsala Drone La Riserva dello StagnoneMarsala Walking Tour

Day plans

Situation

Suggestion

Half a day

Old town (Porta Garibaldi, Cattedrale, Piazza della Repubblica) → San Pietro

One day

morning in the old town & Museo Baglio Anselmi, afternoon winery tour with tasting (book ahead)

Two days

Day 1 town & winery; Day 2 Mozia with the Museo Whitaker, then the salt pans for sunset

For photographers

salt pans in the late afternoon/golden hour; windmills backlit

With children

boat trip to Mozia, explain the salt gardens, early evening at the lagoon

Getting there

Airport: Trapani-Birgi airport (TPS) lies just a few kilometres to the north, right on the Stagnone lagoon – by car it’s around 15–20 minutes to Marsala. For non-residents this means: park outside the zone and continue on foot – the compact old town is easy to walk anyway.
