Ideal for cultural and antiquity travellers; less so for pure beach holidaymakers without a car. Plan a full day for the temples and museum, and 2–3 days including the coast and surroundings. Agrigento has no airport of its own – access is via Palermo or Catania.

Agrigento sits on a hill above the south coast, separated from the ancient temple precinct by a few kilometres of sloping ground. That’s both the appeal and the character of the place: above, the modern, rather plain provincial town with a narrow medieval old town; below, on a ridge, the Doric temples of ancient Akragas, one of the wealthiest cities in the Mediterranean in the 5th century BC.

The Valley of the Temples isn’t actually a valley but a long ridge along which the temples are lined up – best preserved is the Temple of Concordia, one of the most complete ancient temples anywhere. The finds from the site are held in the “Pietro Griffo” Archaeological Museum right next to the complex. The two belong together and fill a full day.

Realistically speaking: the city itself isn’t a postcard destination like Taormina or Cefalù, and the shadeless temple site is gruelling in high summer. But for anyone who takes antiquity and archaeology seriously, this is one of Sicily’s most important destinations. The fine beaches and the Scala dei Turchi lie outside the town and are only partly accessible without a car.

Quick-Facts

Location South coast of Sicily, Province of Agrigento

Time needed 1 day for the temples and museum; 2–3 days including the old town, coast and surroundings

Car not needed in the old town (ZTL); useful for beaches, the Scala dei Turchi and the surrounding area

Getting there no airport of its own – via Palermo (PMO, ~130 km) or Catania (CTA, ~160 km), bus/train to Agrigento Centrale

Best time spring and autumn; high summer is hot with little shade at the temples

Good for antiquity, culture, archaeology; the beach mainly with a car

Highlights Valley of the Temples, Temple of Concordia, Museo Pietro Griffo, old town, Scala dei Turchi

UNESCO Archaeological Area of Agrigento

Who is Agrigento worth it for? The site is large, sprawling and offers little shade – plan half a day to a full day, and in high summer visit early in the morning or in the late afternoon. Full details, prices and routes are on our dedicated page: Valley of the Temples.

Temple of Concordia

The Temple of Concordia is the park’s landmark and one of the best-preserved Greek temples anywhere – it survived the centuries because it was used as a Christian church early on. It’s most striking in the soft light of early morning or in the evening, when it’s floodlit.

Museo Archeologico “Pietro Griffo”

The regional archaeological museum puts the finds from the temple valley into context – the highlight is a Telamon several metres tall, a colossal support figure from the Temple of Zeus. Worthwhile for anyone interested in antiquity via the combined ticket with the park; plan for around 1 to 1.5 hours.

Old town of Agrigento

Above the temples lies the often-overlooked old town: narrow lanes, steps and viewpoints, the Cathedral of San Gerlando and the church of Santa Maria dei Greci, which stands on the foundations of an ancient temple. A shadier contrast for the midday hours – and noticeably livelier in the evening than the temple valley.

Scala dei Turchi

About 15 kilometres to the west, the Scala dei Turchi gleams – a white marl cliff above the sea. It’s photogenic and correspondingly popular; direct access to the steps has, however, recently been regulated or at times closed – be sure to check the current situation before visiting.
