Especially rewarding for culture and food-and-wine travellers, and couples; for a pure beach holiday, Giardini Naxos or Letojanni are more practical. One to two days is ideal. Biggest drawback: heavy day-tripper crowds, high prices and a strict ZTL – arriving by car at midday on a whim costs time and nerves.

Hardly any place in Sicily stages itself as effectively as Taormina. The town sits on a rocky terrace roughly 200 metres above the Ionian Sea; from the tiers of the ancient theatre, the view sweeps past the stage straight to Etna – capped with snow in winter, often trailing a thin plume of smoke in summer. This pairing of architecture and volcano has, since the 19th century, turned Taormina from a stop on the Grand Tour into a fixture of almost every trip to Sicily.

Founded as the Greek city of Tauromenion in the 4th century BC, the town owes its landmark to the Romans: the Teatro Antico took much of its present form in Roman times and served both drama and music – a role it still fulfils today, when summer concerts and festivals fill the tiers. Everyday life plays out along the Corso Umberto, a traffic-free lane between two medieval town gates, lined with baroque churches, small viewing balconies and – just as unmissable – boutiques and cafés at tourist prices.

As striking as the setting is, the downside is just as clear: Taormina is expensive, and by day cruise-ship and coach groups share its narrow lanes. Anyone who experiences the town early in the morning or in the evening – once the day-trippers have left and the light falls flat across the Bay of Naxos – sees a quieter, far more pleasant Taormina. The planning on this page is built around exactly that window.

Quick Facts

Location east coast, Province of Messina; on a rock balcony above the Ionian Sea

Duration 1–2 days for the town & beach; more if used as a base for excursions

Car not needed for the town itself (ZTL!); park on the outskirts

Price level high – one of Sicily’s most expensive destinations

Best time May–June & September–October; high summer hot & crowded

Suited to culture, couples, food and wine; less for a pure beach holiday

Highlights Teatro Antico, Corso Umberto, Isola Bella, Etna views

Biggest drawback day-tripper crowds & prices

Who is Taormina suited for? Admission prices and opening hours are indicative (as of 3 July 2026) and should be checked before you go.

The highlights in detail

Teatro Antico

The ancient theatre is Taormina’s landmark: a Greek-laid-out, later Roman-remodelled semicircular building whose upper tier lets the eye travel straight past the ruined stage to the coast and Etna beyond. It’s worth visiting not just for the architecture, but for this deliberately staged sightline, found in hardly any other ancient building. Practical tip: come early in the morning – from late morning it gets crowded and the shadeless tiers get very hot; in summer a performance stage can temporarily block the view.

Corso Umberto

The Corso Umberto is the traffic-free main artery of the old town, linking the two medieval gates Porta Messina and Porta Catania. Along the lane are baroque churches, small squares with viewing balconies, and shops; the stroll itself is the real way to see the sights along its edges. Honest note: by day the Corso is packed and café and boutique prices are clearly tourist-oriented – it’s most pleasant early in the morning or in the evening, once the day-trippers have gone.

Villa Comunale

The Villa Comunale is the town’s public park garden, laid out on the slope above the coast, with shaded paths, plantings and wrought-iron pavilions. It’s worth a visit above all as a quiet break from the bustle of the Corso: from its terraces the view stretches across the sea towards Etna. Practical tip: a good spot for the hot midday hours, as the shade and elevation offer some relief; there’s no admission fee.

Isola Bella

Isola Bella is a small island below the town, linked to the mainland by a narrow strip of shingle and now designated a nature reserve. It’s worth visiting both for the view from above and for a swimming stop in the Bay of Mazzarò. Practical tip: from Taormina, the cable car (Funivia) runs down to Mazzarò, from where it’s a short walk; the beach is shingle, and on peak summer days the narrow bay fills up early – arrive early if you want to swim.

Madonna della Rocca & Castelmola

Above the old town, a flight of steps leads to the rock-cut chapel of Madonna della Rocca and on to the hilltop village of Castelmola. The climb is worth it for the panorama: from here you take in the ancient theatre, the coast and Etna all at once – the most complete view of the whole area. Practical tip: allow sturdy shoes and time for the walk to the chapel and on to Castelmola; if you’d rather skip the climb, you can also reach Castelmola by bus, but should still walk the final stretch.

Taormina on video

The videos below, from external YouTube channels, give a first impression of Taormina, the Teatro Antico and Isola Bella. They’re meant to offer a small glimpse and whet your appetite, but are no substitute for your own research before the trip.

Waking in TaorminaTaormina, Sicily 4K Tour – Italy 4K Walking Tour with Historical Captions!4K] 🇮🇹 Taormina: Siziliens glamourösestes ReisezielIsola Bella Sicily 4K Drone Video

Day plans

Situation

Suggestion

Half a day

Teatro Antico → Corso Umberto → Villa Comunale

A full day

morning: theatre & old town, midday break, afternoon: Isola Bella/beach, evening: Corso

In the heat

theatre before 11am, midday in/by the water (Mazzarò), later shaded lanes

With children

ride the cable car, Isola Bella beach, ice cream on the Corso, short distances

Without a car

train to Taormina-Giardini, Taormina-Link bus into the centre, everything on foot

Getting there

By car: via the A18; a strict ZTL applies in the town (see below). By train: the Taormina-Giardini station lies down on the coast; the Taormina-Link bus departs right outside the station for the historic centre (when booking with Trenitalia, choose “Taormina Centro” as the destination; the bus portion currently costs around €2 on top of the train ticket).
