The clock&#8217;s midday spectacle takes place daily around noon &ndash; anyone wanting to see it should be on the Piazza del Duomo a few minutes beforehand.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The highlights in detail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cathedral (Duomo) &amp; astronomical clock<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cathedral on the Piazza del Duomo is the city&#8217;s main church and was largely reconstructed after the destruction of 1908 and 1943; inside, a wooden ceiling and mosaics define the space. The real crowd-puller is the astronomical clock fitted to the campanile in the 1930s, one of the largest of its kind: its figures spring into a mechanical sequence lasting several minutes every day around 12 noon. Anyone wanting to see the spectacle should be on the piazza a few minutes before twelve, ideally with a clear view of the tower &ndash; the square empties quickly afterwards. The church itself can be visited in half an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bell tower (Campanile)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The freestanding bell tower next to the cathedral houses the clockwork and can be partly climbed for a fee. The climb brings you close to the mechanism and offers a view over the rooftops as far as the strait. It&#8217;s worthwhile mainly for anyone interested in the clock&#8217;s technology or looking for an elevated vantage point. Allow one to one-and-a-half hours for the visit. Admission costs &euro;9, reduced &euro;4.50, free on the first Sunday of the month; open Tuesday to Saturday 9am&ndash;7pm (last entry 6pm), Sunday and holidays 9am&ndash;1pm (last entry 12:30pm), closed Mondays.
