Its best-known piece is the &ldquo;Giovane di Mozia&rdquo;, an almost life-size marble statue of a young man from the 5th century BC &ndash; interpretations range from a charioteer (auriga) to a victorious athlete to a dignitary. The figure is considered one of the most important works of ancient sculpture in Sicily. Practical tip: the museum is compact; if you want to see the statue in peace, come outside the boat rush hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cothon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cothon is a rectangular, artificially built basin near the city wall in the south of the island. For a long time it was considered an ancient dry dock for ships; more recent research suggests it was more likely a water-filled basin within a sacred precinct. Whatever its function, the Cothon is one of the most clearly recognisable structures on the site and a good spot to picture the extent of the Punic city. Sturdy shoes are a good idea, since the path can be uneven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tophet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tophet is a Phoenician-Punic sanctuary on the shore where numerous stelae and urns were found. Such sites are much debated in scholarship; what&#8217;s certain is that they were a central cult place of the Punic world. To the untrained eye the Tophet initially looks unremarkable &ndash; a field of stones &ndash; but it gains considerably in interest with a little background knowledge or an explanation. Today it lies largely beneath the shallow lagoon; in calm, low water its course can be made out. The gate itself survives as a wall remnant and marks the northern entrance to the city.
