During Arab rule from the 9th century onward, it was converted into a mosque – a shift you can still trace today on a column of the southern portico, where a verse from the Quran is carved. After the Norman conquest of Palermo, the building was consecrated again as a church.

The present building was founded in 1185 by the Norman-English Archbishop Walter Ophamil (Gualtiero Offamilio). He had the cathedral built as a powerful, fortress-like complex – partly as a counterweight to the nearby, magnificent church of Monreale. Ophamil himself is buried in the crypt.

Over the centuries the cathedral was repeatedly rebuilt and extended, and it’s exactly this layering that gives it its charm: Norman masonry and crenellations, Arab-style inlay work and decorative bands on the exterior wall, a Gothic south porch from the 15th century with an elaborately decorated portal, and finally a large Neoclassical dome, added at the end of the 18th century under the architect Ferdinando Fuga. Fuga also completely redesigned the interior at that time. So a single building tells the whole multicultural history of Palermo – from the Arabs through the Normans and Hohenstaufen to modern times.

What You’ll See

The most exciting view is the exterior: walk around the building to take in the mix of styles – crenellations, towers and Arab-style patterns. The eye-catcher is the Gothic south porch with the main portal and wooden door. The Neoclassically redesigned interior then feels surprisingly bright and austere – a deliberate contrast that surprises many visitors. Worth seeing inside are the meridian line in the floor (an astronomical sundial from 1801) and the chapel of Saint Rosalia, the patron saint of Palermo.

Royal and Imperial Tombs

In a side chapel to the right of the entrance stand the porphyry sarcophagi of Norman and Hohenstaufen rulers. Here rest, among others, Emperor Frederick II (died 1250), his father Emperor Henry VI, his mother Constance of Sicily (d’Altavilla) and his Norman grandfather, King Roger II. The dark red porphyry stone had been reserved for emperors since Roman antiquity and underscores the status of those buried here.

Rooftop Terraces

Narrow staircases lead up to the rooftop terraces. From there you look out over the Arab-Norman towers, crenellations and domes at close range, and across the rooftops of the old town to Monte Pellegrino. The climb involves steps, so it isn’t wheelchair accessible and can be tiring in the midday heat. Note: roof access may occasionally be closed for restoration work or weather – it’s best to check in advance.

Treasury and Crypt

The treasury (Tesoro) holds liturgical vessels, vestments and crown regalia – the most famous piece is the golden imperial crown (kamelaukion), found in the tomb of Constance of Aragon. The crypt beneath the choir houses the tombs of Palermo’s archbishops, including that of founder Gualtiero Offamilio, some in ancient Roman sarcophagi.

Tickets & Opening Hours

The church interior is freely accessible. A ticket is required for the so-called Area Monumentale – roof, royal tombs, crypt, treasury and apses. All prices and times are guidelines (as of 12 July 2026) and should be checked before your visit.

Ticket / Area

Price

What’s included

Church interior

free

nave, chapel of St Rosalia, meridian line

Rooftop terraces only (Tetti)

€5

roof access, panorama over the old town

Area Monumentale (full ticket)

€10 · reduced €5

roof, royal & imperial tombs, crypt, treasury, apses

Children under 11

free

–

The reduced rate of €5 applies to those aged 11 to 17. The church interior is open Monday to Saturday roughly 7:00am–7:00pm and on Sundays around the times of services. The Area Monumentale is accessible Monday to Saturday roughly 9:30am–6:00pm and from 10:00am on Sundays, with last admission around 30 minutes before closing; individual areas such as the roof may have different hours. Tickets are sold exclusively by the cathedral itself – online via the official website or at the on-site ticket desks; third-party sellers charging a markup are explicitly discouraged.

Planning Your Visit

Allow 30–45 minutes for the church interior and exterior; with the royal tombs, crypt, treasury and roof this quickly becomes 1.5–2 hours. As an active place of worship, the usual dress code applies: shoulders and knees covered, no shorts or tank tops; viewing is restricted during services. For the climb to the roof you’ll need sturdy, comfortable shoes – it isn’t recommended for people with heart conditions, claustrophobia or a fear of heights. Don’t confuse the cathedral with the Cappella Palatina in the nearby Norman Palace – these are two separate buildings, though they combine well into a single morning.

Getting There

The cathedral sits on Via Vittorio Emanuele in the middle of the old town and is easily reached on foot from most central points – around ten minutes from the Quattro Canti and Fontana Pretoria. The historic centre is a ZTL (restricted traffic zone); driving there isn’t worthwhile – better to park outside and walk in. From the main train station it’s about a 15-minute walk, and several AMAT bus lines stop nearby. More on transport and parking under Palermo and Province of Palermo.

Best Time to Visit

The most pleasant times are spring (April to June) and autumn (September, October), with mild temperatures. In high summer Palermo gets hot – then the early morning is worthwhile, especially for the climb to the shadeless rooftop terraces. The church interior remains a cool refuge year-round. For a general overview, see Best Time to Visit Sicily.
