While the Museo Paolo Orsi tells the Greek and Roman story, Bellomo picks up where that leaves off: Byzantine, Norman, Hohenstaufen, Catalan, baroque. The collection was formed from 1940 by splitting off from the archaeological museum; many pieces come from churches and monasteries of south-eastern Sicily that were expropriated in 1866 under the law dissolving religious orders.

The real total artwork, though, is the building itself. Its core is Hohenstaufen, 13th century — the same building school as the Castello Maniace at the southern tip of Ortigia. In the 15th century the Catalan governors of the Camera Reginale added a Gothic upper floor, with an open staircase in the courtyard, a loggia and pierced capitals. Two eras, stacked on top of each other. The nickname “Bargello of Syracuse” is no accident.

Who the visit suits

Criterion

Well suited

Limitations

Art lovers

Antonello, Gagini, Laurana, Minniti across two floors

Antonello’s Annunciazione is heavily damaged

Architecture enthusiasts

Hohenstaufen building with a Catalan-Gothic upper floor, imperial eagle in the vestibule

—

Coming for Caravaggio

—

wrong address — the painting hangs in Santa Lucia al Sepolcro

Without a rental car

right in the middle of Ortigia, 200 m from the Piazza Duomo

—

With a rental car

—

ZTL blocks Mon–Sat 11am–3:30pm and 5pm–2am, Sun all day from 10am

In summer heat

indoor spaces, compact

—

Combined with Paolo Orsi

makes sense: antiquity there, medieval to baroque here

no combined ticket — two separate tickets

Sunday visit

free on the first Sunday of the month

Sundays only until 1:00pm/1:30pm

The Caravaggio — the most important clarification

Very many visitors arrive expecting to see Caravaggio’s “Seppellimento di Santa Lucia” at the Bellomo. That hasn’t been true for years, and it costs a whole morning if you don’t know beforehand.

The painting’s journey: it hung from 2009 to 2020 in Santa Lucia alla Badia on the Piazza Duomo, then went on loan to the MART in Rovereto, where it was restored by the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro — and afterwards returned to its original place: the high altar of the Basilica Santuario Santa Lucia al Sepolcro, Via L. Bignami 1. That’s not on Ortigia, but in the Borgata district. It’s owned by the Fondo Edifici di Culto of the Ministry of the Interior, not by the Region.

The basilica is open from 9:00am to 12:45pm and from 3:30pm to 7:00pm, on Thursdays only from 11:00am. Anyone wanting to see both should plan two separate trips.

What you’ll see

The tour is arranged strictly chronologically and runs over two floors.

Ground floor

18th-century carriage collection — unusual for a painting gallery and one of the museum’s most distinctive sections.

Sculpture from the Byzantine era to the 16th century — with works by the Gagini family, Francesco Laurana and Giovan Battista Mazzolo.

The sarcophagi of the governors of the Camera Reginale — including that of Giovanni Cardenas, a work by Antonello Gagini from 1506. The underside of Giovanni Çabastida’s tomb slab was simply reused in the 16th century as an altar antependium, with a Deposition between Lucy and John the Baptist.

In the vestibule (Room III): the Hohenstaufen imperial eagle in the keystone — the quiet clue to who built this place.

Upper floor

Antonello da Messina, “Annunciazione” (1474), Room V — 180 by 180 centimetres, from the Chiesa dell’Annunziata in Palazzolo Acreide, acquired in 1907.

Mario Minniti — the Syracusan who appears in Caravaggio’s workshop and on his paintings. Anyone wanting to follow the Caravaggio thread finds him here rather than in the main work.

Filippo Paladini, Guglielmo Borremans and further Sicilian painting.

Decorative arts: silverware, presepi, liturgical vestments, ceramics.

The condition of the Annunciazione — honestly

The painting has suffered. The 1693 earthquake and decades of damp wall storage damaged it badly; the panel was later transferred onto canvas. Cesare Brandi toned in the missing areas uniformly in 1942, a conservative intervention followed in 1986/87, and most recently it was worked on at the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro from 2007 to 2009 and unveiled again at the end of 2008. Large gaps still remain visible despite this. That’s highly interesting art-historically — but anyone seeking the unblemished Antonello experience will find it more readily with the Annunciata at the Palazzo Abatellis in Palermo.

Tickets, prices and opening hours

Admission costs 8 euros, reduced 4 euros. This figure appears both on the operator’s museum page and at the Comune di Siracusa, which last confirmed it in December 2023.

Why 10 euros shows up everywhere: that’s the price of the Museo Paolo Orsi. Travel portals have wrongly carried it over to Bellomo since a tariff change. There’s no primary source for a 10-euro price at the Bellomo. That said, the picture isn’t entirely clean either: the museum’s own page dates from 2013 — which is exactly why so many contradictory figures circulate.

As a facility of the Assessorato, the Sicilian regional tariff rules apply, which differ from those on the mainland:

Group

Rule

Note

First Sunday of the month

free

Sicily’s own regional rule

Under 18

free

—

EU citizens 18–25

50 percent

so 4 euros

Over 65

full price

Sicily has no senior discount

Teachers, journalists

free

including fixed-term teachers

Disability + 1 companion

free

—

Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday 9:00am to 7:00pm, closed Mondays, ticket office closes half an hour before the end. For Sunday, the two official sources give different times — the museum’s own page says 1:30pm, the Comune says 1:00pm. We won’t resolve this, but recommend: plan for 1:00pm, and you’ll always be on the safe side.

Tickets are available at the ticket desk on site. A regular online presale isn’t documented; a temporary ticketing handover to the Fondazione INDA was explicitly limited to November and December 2024. The museum publishes no rule on photography — ask on site. Groups and school classes register on 0931 487248.

There is no combined ticket with the Bellomo. The Parco archeologico di Siracusa offers a combined ticket for Neapolis and the Museo Paolo Orsi for 18 euros (reduced 9); the Bellomo isn’t on that list. The 13.50-euro ticket occasionally mentioned dates from the long-abolished provincial administration.

Getting there

On foot, the Bellomo is easily reached: about 200 metres from the Piazza Duomo, around 150 metres from the Fonte Aretusa, a good two kilometres from Siracusa station. The walking times are our own estimate based on the map.

By car it’s tricky. Ortigia’s ZTL blocks Monday to Saturday from 11:00am to 3:30pm and from 5:00pm to 2:00am, and on Sundays and public holidays all day from 10:00am. In practice that means: anyone arriving during the museum’s opening hours will almost always run into the restriction — on Sundays it covers the entire opening period. Hotel passes are valid only for driving through to load and unload, not for parking. The recommendation is clear: park outside Ortigia and walk in. More on the city: Syracuse; more generally bus & train in Sicily and car rental in Sicily.

Accessibility: the upper floor with the picture gallery — and thus the Antonello — is reached via the Catalan open staircase in the courtyard. No lift is documented in any official source; check in advance on 0931 69511 if needed. What is documented, however, is a tactile, narrated route for visitors with visual impairments, developed with the University of Catania.

Best time and common mistakes

As an indoor destination, the Bellomo suits any time of year, and especially the midday heat. The four most common mistakes:

Coming for the Caravaggio. It hangs elsewhere — see above. By far the most costly misunderstanding.

Expecting to pay 10 euros. It’s 8.

Sunday afternoon. It closes at 1:00pm or 1:30pm.

Driving into Ortigia. The ZTL covers almost the entire opening period.

In fairness: the operator itself describes its collection as “of varying qualitative significance” given the strictly chronological hang. So the density is uneven — a handful of outstanding works are separated by longer stretches. Visitors also repeatedly report individual closed rooms; this can’t be confirmed from official sources. Caravaggio’s “Burial of St Lucy” (1608) hangs once again on the high altar of the Basilica Santuario Santa Lucia al Sepolcro in the Borgata district, outside Ortigia. From 2009 to 2020 it was on display in Santa Lucia alla Badia on the Piazza Duomo, then on loan at the MART in Rovereto. Many guidebooks are still working from that old information. The panel was badly damaged by the 1693 earthquake and damp storage, and was later transferred onto canvas. After restorations in 1942, 1986/87 and most recently 2007 to 2009, large gaps remain visible. In the vestibule sits the Hohenstaufen imperial eagle in the keystone. In the 15th century a Catalan-Gothic upper floor was added. This layering recalls the Bargello in Florence.

</details>
<details class="ts-faq__item">
Is there a combined ticket with the Museo Paolo Orsi?

Not with the Bellomo.
