In 480 BC, a coalition of Sicilian Greeks under Gelon of Syracuse and Theron of Akragas defeated the Carthaginian army here; the Punic general Hamilcar fell. The victory is considered one of the most important of the Greek world in the west. The Doric Tempio della Vittoria was built to commemorate it.

In 409 BC the Carthaginians under Hannibal Mago conquered and destroyed the city; it remained uninhabited afterward. Survivors founded nearby Thermai Himeraiai – today’s Termini Imerese. During rescue excavations for the double-tracking of the railway (2008–2011), a huge burial site was uncovered in the western necropolis; according to the park portal, over 13,000 burials, including mass graves of those who fell in the battles – one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in Sicily in recent decades.

Planning Your Visit & Getting There

By car, via the A19/A20 to the Buonfornello exit, about 35–40 km east of Palermo, before Cefalù. The temple area with the museum (lower town) and the upper town have separate entrances – plan for both. Without a car, the visit is considerably harder: there’s a Buonfornello/Termini Imerese station, but no convenient direct link to the entrance, and in places a walk along busy roads – a rental car, taxi or tour makes the most sense (see Buses & trains in Sicily). The site is open and shadeless – bring water and sun protection.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal. The wide, shadeless coastal terrain makes high summer tiring; come early in the morning and keep the coastal wind in mind.

Nearby Alternatives

A few kilometres east lies Cefalù with its Norman cathedral and beach. Combines well with the Greek-Roman city of Solunto and a side trip to Palermo; inland, the Madonie mountains lead to hill towns like Castelbuono.

Frequently Asked Questions

<details class="ts-faq__item">
Where is the Parco archeologico di Himera?

In Località Buonfornello, in the municipality of Termini Imerese (Province of Palermo), on the north coast, about 35–40 km east of Palermo and west of Cefalù – right between the motorway, the rail line and the sea.

</details>
<details class="ts-faq__item">
What can you see at Himera?

The Doric Victory Temple (today its foundations), the upper town with the Athena sanctuary, and the antiquarium and Museo Pirro Marconi with finds, including the mass graves from the battles of 480 and 409 BC.

</details>
<details class="ts-faq__item">
Why is Himera historically so significant?

Here in 480 BC the Sicilian Greeks under Gelon and Theron defeated Carthage – one of the most important victories of the Greek world in the west.
