The castle is famous for the <strong>conspiracy of 1160\/61<\/strong>: here Norman barons led by Matteo Bonello plotted the uprising against King William I (&#8220;William the Bad&#8221;). The revolt failed, and Bonello was blinded and killed.<\/p>\n<p>In the 14th century the powerful Chiaramonte family expanded the complex; later, under the Enr&iacute;quez and Amato families, it was transformed into a noble residence. An earthquake destroyed the main tower in 1823.
