The structure seen today dates back to Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, who commissioned the architect Riccardo da Lentini around 1232&ndash;1240: a square plan with cylindrical corner towers and a striking marble portal.<\/p>\n<p>In the Aragonese period, Syracuse was the seat of the &#8220;Camera Reginale&#8221;, and the castle housed several queens. It later served as a fortress, barracks and prison; in 1704 a lightning strike detonated the powder magazine, damaging a tower and the walls.
