In short:<\/strong> You can explore the lower slopes of Etna independently<\/strong> \u2013 up to Rifugio Sapienza (south side, around 1,900 m) by car or bus, then by cable car to about 2,500 m and on marked trails. The summit region with the active craters<\/strong> (above roughly 2,500 m, and no further than 2,750 m) may only be entered with an authorized mountain guide<\/strong>, and whether it’s open depends on volcanic activity and the authorities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Etna has been in a sustained eruptive phase since August 6, 2026. On August 13, 2026, the Protezione Civile Sicilia therefore activated the operational ALLARME phase with a complete closure of the Zona Sommitale (summit zone); the alert level has since been raised and lowered several times. The lower and middle areas (Rifugio Sapienza, cable car) were not affected. We deliberately don’t state the day’s current alert level and access situation as a fixed figure here, but instead refer you to our continuously updated live ticker on the 2026 eruption phase<\/a> as well as the Protezione Civile Sicilia as the primary source.
