This overview summarises the current situation in Sicily and the neighbouring island groups – covering the ongoing wildfire situation in several provinces, travel and transport, further nature and safety matters, culture and events, as well as general tourism developments.

Travel & Transport

There are currently no new disruption reports for ferries, airports, rail or buses. However, due to the wildfire situation (details in the following section, organised by province), there may be local road closures or restricted access to individual places, particularly in the Taormina/Castelmola area and in the provinces of Agrigento, Caltanissetta and Enna. Before travelling to these areas, the current situation should be checked with the responsible municipalities. For the rest of September, a number of announced strike days should also be expected for rail, air and local public transport, most of them in the second half of the month. Anyone travelling during this period should check timetables again shortly before departure with the relevant transport operators, as individual dates can be confirmed, postponed or cancelled at short notice.

Nature & Safety

Wildfires: situation by province

Sicily has been in a serious wildfire situation since last weekend. The regional Civil Protection authority (Protezione Civile) continues to rate the provinces of Agrigento, Caltanissetta and Enna at the highest danger level (Red Alert), while the remaining six provinces – Palermo, Trapani, Messina, Catania, Syracuse and Ragusa – are at the medium level (Orange Alert). Over the weekend alone, the regional Corpo Forestale recorded 198 fires, supported by 20 approved aerial operations with firefighting aircraft and helicopters. According to the authorities, around 750 firefighters and around 120 personnel from the ongoing wildfire campaign are deployed today, Tuesday. The following overview arranges the known fire events and the current alert level by province, so that travellers can quickly assess the situation for their respective destination area.

Agrigento – Red Alert

In Sciacca (Makauda district), around 500 people were evacuated from a holiday complex to the beach over the weekend; six people – including an infant – required medical treatment for smoke inhalation. Near Menfi, a fire burned for several hours. The province remains at the highest danger level today.

Caltanissetta – Red Alert

The province was one of the firefighting focal points over the weekend and remains at the highest danger level today. No further details on individual fires with a precise location are available in the sources reviewed.

Enna – Red Alert

The province also remains at the highest danger level today. No further details on individual fires with a precise location are available in the sources reviewed.

Messina – Orange Alert, acute major fire near Taormina

Today, Taormina is the area most affected: a major fire broke out in Contrada Sant’Antonio, spreading rapidly to Contrada Zappulla and Contrada Tirone and advancing towards the wooded area on the border with Castelmola. The zones at greatest risk have been evacuated, and firefighters, rescue teams and a firefighting helicopter are deployed; the situation continues to develop and is being updated continuously by the municipal administration.

Palermo – Orange Alert

In Ciminna and Ventimiglia, residents had to leave their homes over the weekend, and the fire near Ciminna could only be extinguished after around 36 hours. A 26-year-old man died from burns sustained while trying to protect his property near Ciminna. On Monday, operations shifted to Santa Caterina, Misilmeri and Bompietro.

Catania – Orange Alert

Near Acireale, a fire close to a gas storage facility caused concern. No further major events with a precise location are currently reported for the province.

Trapani, Syracuse, Ragusa – Orange Alert

These three provinces are also under Orange Alert today. Trapani is additionally subject to a separate pre-warning level with medium wildfire risk from the Civil Protection authority; in the Syracuse area, several fire service operations took place over the weekend. No individual major fire events with a precise location are reported for these three provinces in the sources reviewed.

For travellers, this means: in the areas mentioned, it should be checked daily with the responsible municipalities and the Civil Protection authority whether roads, hiking trails or tourist facilities are closed. Dense smoke can significantly affect local air quality; instructions from emergency services and local authorities must be followed at all times, even if your own destination does not appear to be directly affected.

Etna

There is currently no new communiqué from the responsible authority on Etna. The most recent report documented persistent, variably intense activity at the Voragine summit crater with occasional ash emission, while the lava field in the Valle del Bove was overall cooling. For the current daily status and any access restrictions, the official communications from the responsible authorities are authoritative – no independent assessment of the danger level is made here deliberately.

Weather and storms

There is no active weather warning for Sicily for 1 September; temperatures are gradually falling after the preceding heatwave but remain above average. Winds are light from northerly directions, locally moderate in the west of the island, and the sea is moderate to rough, particularly between the Strait of Sicily and the Ionian Sea. The persistent dry weather and wind are among the contributing factors to the current wildfire situation.

Events & Culture

Festa della Madonna del Tindari (7–8 September)

The pilgrimage to the Marian shrine of Tindari above Patti is one of the most important religious festivals in north-eastern Sicily. The celebrations begin on the evening of 7 September with a procession and reach their high point on 8 September with the solemn pontifical mass, during which a votive lamp is traditionally donated to burn in front of the image of the Madonna throughout the year. Musical performances, market stalls and a closing firework display accompany the multi-day programme. Of note for visitors: the shrine is situated in an exposed position on a rocky outcrop with limited parking. On the festival days, significantly heavier traffic is to be expected on the access road and around Oliveri and Patti; an early arrival or the use of bus or shuttle connections is recommended.

Sagra dell’Arancino di Ficarazzi and Fiera di Settembre (10–13 September, Aci Castello)

The Ficarazzi district of Aci Castello hosts Sicily’s oldest official arancino festival, complemented by the traditional autumn fair. Over four evenings, tasting stalls, live music and an entertainment programme for families, as well as a funfair, provide a packed schedule on Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII. As the event mainly takes place in the evening and at night, families with young children should take the timings into account; parking in the town centre is expected to be tight. Its proximity to Catania makes a short excursion easy to fit into a wider tour.

Cous Cous Fest (18–27 September, San Vito Lo Capo)

One of Sicily’s best-known culinary festivals returns to San Vito Lo Capo again in 2026. Over more than ten days, chefs from various countries compete in an international couscous competition, accompanied by cooking shows, a market area with regional produce and free evening concerts on the beach. As San Vito Lo Capo is very busy during this period, early accommodation booking is recommended. The town has only limited access to public transport without your own vehicle, which should be factored into travel planning. This notice is given deliberately early, as the festival does not begin for a good two weeks and requires corresponding planning lead time.

Smaller, time-limited dates over the coming two weeks include the Festa del Grano di Raddusa (11–13 September, a historic harvest festival with a procession of traditional carts) as well as several local Marian festivals between 8 and 10 September in various municipalities across the island. These are mainly of significance to the respective local community and hold no major relevance for travellers from further afield.

General & Tourism

There are currently no further day-to-day reports in this area. As background, it can be noted that the 2026 summer season has been positive overall for Sicily, with noticeable growth in arrivals and overnight stays compared to the previous year – a trend over several weeks rather than a single day-to-day report.

Note: all information as of 1 September 2026; the wildfire and traffic situation can change at short notice. Before travelling, please check current timetables, opening hours, event dates, and weather and safety warnings again with the responsible authorities or the relevant municipalities and organisers.

A compact overview of the current situation in Sicily on 1 September 2026: a major fire near Taormina with evacuations, Red Alert Level in three provinces, plus key upcoming travel dates such as the Festa della Madonna del Tindari.

[38,37,40,39

post-4040","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-events-culture","category-nature-safety","category-sicily-radar","category-weather-storms
["GET
