Travel & Transport<\/h2>\n\n

The transport sector remains in the summer strike moratorium, which runs until 5 September. Nationwide walkouts affecting rail, bus, ferries and air transport are not permitted during this period. No reports of strike-related disruptions in Sicily were recorded for 28 August. Disruptions caused by strikes at foreign air traffic control authorities are unaffected by this and can affect individual connections to Palermo, Catania, Trapani and Comiso.<\/p>\n\n

Ferry and hydrofoil connections to the Aeolian, Egadi and Pelagie Islands ran on Friday according to the regular summer timetable. High season ends on several routes at the end of the month; from September, service frequencies will be gradually reduced. Anyone planning an island combination in the coming two weeks should not schedule the return trip on the last connection of the day and should check the timetable again shortly before travelling.<\/p>\n\n

Nature & Safety<\/h2>\n\n

Heat and Wildfire Danger<\/h3>\n\n

An official pre-alert level applies for the whole of 28 August. For heatwaves, the highest warning level has been declared for Palermo, Catania and Messina, with felt temperatures between 39 and 41 degrees. For Palermo, the highest health warning level has additionally been set, explicitly affecting not just at-risk groups but the entire population. According to current forecasts, Friday and Saturday mark the peak of the heatwave: widely above 40 degrees, locally around 44 degrees in the Trapani area, around Syracuse, on the Catania plain and inland. A noticeable decline is not expected until the start of next week.<\/p>\n\n

The highest level also applies for wildfire danger, in the provinces of Palermo, Enna and Caltanissetta. The combination of persistent heat and parched vegetation keeps the risk high across large parts of the island. Hikes in the Madonie, the Nebrodi and inland areas should either be postponed these days or scheduled for the early morning hours; short-notice closures of individual trails are possible. The same pattern is advisable for city visits: start early, spend the midday hours indoors, carry enough water. Etna<\/h3>\n\n

The responsible volcano observatory reported the end of the previously announced eruptive activity on 26 August at 11:20am UTC. No new updates on volcanic activity have been published since. Access restrictions for the summit zone remain in place independently of this; they are governed by orders from the neighbouring municipalities and can change at short notice. Free hiking is only permitted up to a set altitude mark; above that, conditions apply and there is an absolute access ban for the upper areas. Anyone wishing to visit the volcano is best advised to check the current day’s status directly with authorised mountain guides on site. Given the current temperatures, it should also be borne in mind that the ascents from the cable car offer hardly any shade.<\/p>\n\n

Stromboli<\/h3>\n\n

On Stromboli, the usual Strombolian activity continues. The weekly report from 25 August records a medium to medium-high frequency of explosive activity at medium intensity; in early August, lava overflows occurred on three days in the area of the northern crater zone. Access to the summit areas is governed by municipal orders and is only possible up to a set altitude, accompanied by authorised guides. For observing the activity from the sea, the information provided by boat operators applies.<\/p>\n\n

Events & Culture<\/h2>\n\n

San Corrado in Noto: Main Festival on Sunday, 30 August<\/h3>\n\n

The summer patronal festival for San Corrado is the most important festival in the yearly calendar of Noto<\/a>. Corrado Confalonieri, a knight from Piacenza, withdrew as a hermit in the 14th century to a grotto southwest of the town and died there on 19 February 1351; his beatification on 28 August 1515 is the occasion for the second, summer festival date on the last Sunday in August. The relics are kept in a silver Arca, which is brought from the side chapel to the cathedral’s high altar for the festival.<\/p>\n\n

According to the published programme, the festival day begins as early as 4am with a mass for pilgrims arriving on foot from Rosolini, followed by further services at 7am, 8am and 9am. At 9am, the floral tribute takes place at Piazzale Adorno, at 10:30am the solemn pontifical mass in the cathedral, and at 6pm a further mass in the Chiesa di San Carlo. The high point is the procession with the Arca from 7pm: from the cathedral along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Via Gioberti, Via Cavour and Via Garibaldi, with a first station in front of the prison and a second at the Chiesa del Crocifisso, then back via Via Montuoro, Largo Landolina and the Corso to the cathedral. The Arca is carried by the Portatori, accompanied by the elaborately decorated Cilii, tall ornamental candles on wooden shafts whose origin dates back to the early 17th century. On the following Sunday, the procession is repeated as the Ottava in the upper part of town.<\/p>\n\n

For travellers, this means: the baroque town centre is closed to traffic for hours from the late afternoon of 30 August, or only passable with restrictions, particularly along Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Anyone arriving by car should plan for parking outside the centre and a longer walk; participation itself is free. Visiting the cathedral and the palazzi is only possible to a limited extent during the day because of the services. Anyone wanting to see Noto in peace is better off choosing a different day \u2013 and should bear the current temperatures in mind when planning, as the procession route runs almost entirely without shade.<\/p>\n\n

ViniMilo in Milo: 46th Edition until 13 September<\/h3>\n\n

In Milo, on Etna’s eastern flank, the 46th edition of ViniMilo, Sicily’s oldest pre-harvest wine festival, has been running since 27 August. It centres on the Carricante grape and, with it, Etna Bianco Superiore, which may only be produced within this municipality. The programme runs until 13 September and combines trade events with public dates: tastings, book presentations, conferences on oils, biodiversity and the effects of climate change on viticulture on the volcano.<\/p>\n\n

The dates in detail: on 28 August from 8:30pm, an evening dedicated to volcanic wines from around the world; on 29 August from 6:30pm, a conference on the Carricante of Milo; on 30 August from 8pm, an oenological journey along the Odysseus route. Probably the most demanding event is on 4 September from 7pm, a vertical tasting of twelve 2022-vintage Etna Bianco Superiore wines from the Contrade of Milo. On the weekends of 5\/6 and 12\/13 September, the Salotto del Gusto on Piazza Belvedere opens from 6:30pm with stalls, street food and regional products, along with the open-air Enoteca on Piazza Municipio; on Sundays, the producers’ market is added from 9am.<\/p>\n\n

In practical terms: the market stalls and the open-air Enoteca are freely accessible, while the guided tastings and masterclasses are paid, limited in numbers and require registration \u2013 prices range roughly between 15 and 65 euros depending on the format, and some dates are already fully booked. Milo lies at around 700 metres altitude and is noticeably cooler than the coast; a jacket is recommended for the evening events. The village is small, the centre gets crowded on festival weekends, and parking fills up quickly. Since wine is at the centre of the tastings, the return journey should be organised accordingly \u2013 there is practically no public transport late in the evening in this part of the Etna area.<\/p>\n\n

Festa degli Eoliani nel Mondo on Salina: until 6 September<\/h3>\n\n

The 14th edition of the Festa degli Eoliani nel Mondo, commemorating the emigration from the Aeolian Islands, has been running since 27 August. Between the late 19th and mid-20th centuries, a large part of the island population left for Argentina, Australia and the United States; some islands lost the majority of their inhabitants as a result. The event addresses this history through book presentations, conversations with contemporary witnesses, talks and musical evenings.<\/p>\n\n

The central venue is Malfa on Salina; the opening of this edition took place on 28 August at 9pm on Piazza Immacolata, with further dates following until 6 September in the other island municipalities too. The programme is organised by the archipelago’s municipalities together with the emigration museum. For travellers, this is one of the few opportunities to learn about the islands’ history beyond swimming coves and boat trips. The evening events run late; anyone travelling from Lipari<\/a> should check the last return connection of the day beforehand, as it generally does not wait for the event to end. Admission to the public events is free; the organisers announce the exact daily programme at short notice.<\/p>\n\n

Preview: Madonna del Tindari on 7 and 8 September<\/h3>\n\n

In just under two weeks, one of Sicily’s largest pilgrimage events takes place: the festival of the Madonna del Tindari. The destination is the basilica on the headland above the Gulf of Patti, where a dark-toned figure of the Madonna is venerated. 7 September is marked by masses from morning until late at night; in the evening, the procession with the venerated image passes through the town. 8 September brings the solemn pontifical mass with the handing over of the votive lamp, which then burns in front of the image throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n

Several thousand pilgrims are expected, some on foot from the surrounding municipalities. Access to the shrine is heavily restricted on both days; the municipality usually sets up a separate traffic scheme for this, with parking areas below the headland and shuttle transport. Anyone already in the area should factor in that the neighbouring archaeological site of Tyndaris and the Marinello lagoon are also noticeably busier than usual on these days. Anyone wanting to see the ancient remains in peace is better off choosing a different date.<\/p>\n\n

Alongside this, early September marks the start of the season for smaller harvest festivals. A sagra<\/a> is a local festival built around a single product; announced dates include the Arancino Sagra in Aci Castello from 10 to 13 September and the wheat festival in Raddusa from 11 to 13 September. Dates and times for these local festivals are often only set at short notice and should be checked with the respective municipality before travelling.<\/p>\n\n

General & Tourism<\/h2>\n\n

A precautionary bathing ban has been in effect at the town beach of Mondello near Palermo<\/a> since 27 August. A sample taken the previous day found elevated levels of intestinal enterococci in the water in front of the former Charleston bathhouse, indicating contamination of faecal origin. The ban is narrowly limited: it covers two stretches of around 50 metres each, east and west of the Charleston access point, not the rest of the bay. The municipality issued the measure as a precaution to protect public health; it will be lifted once new measurements are again within the limit values. Anyone heading to Mondello in the coming days should watch for signage on site \u2013 the marked area is clearly identifiable, and the rest of the beach remains open as usual.<\/p>\n\n

Individual findings like this are not unusual at Sicilian town beaches in late summer and are as a rule resolved within a few days. They are no reason to rearrange a beach holiday, but a good reason to pay attention to current notices at beaches close to towns.<\/p>\n\n
