This overview summarises the current situation in Sicily: a nationwide rail strike will restrict large parts of train services from this evening, Etna has once again been under the highest aviation warning level for volcanic ash since the previous day, wildfire danger has eased somewhat compared with the red alert level of recent days, and today and tomorrow the town of Mistretta celebrates its most important festival of the year.<\/p>\n\n
From Monday evening at 9:18 pm until Tuesday at 9:17 pm, a nationwide, 24-hour strike<\/a> is taking place in rail transport, also affecting Sicily. It has been called by the unions Cub Trasporti, Sgb and Orsa together with a national assembly of train and on-board staff and the Fsi group; Trenitalia, Trenitalia Tper, Trenord and the long-distance operator Italo are affected. The unions cite workplace safety, the preservation of public rail services and the protection of jobs in the sector as the background: they particularly criticise the planned tender for the state-funded long-distance service outside the high-speed lines, split into three lots, which the unions see as the first step towards a gradual fragmentation of the national rail system; a motion to preserve the social clause for the employees affected was rejected by the Chamber of Deputies in early August. For regional services, guaranteed minimum services apply on weekdays from 6 to 9 am and 6 to 9 pm, and on Sundays and public holidays from 7 to 10 am and 6 to 9 pm; Italo has also published its own list of guaranteed high-speed connections. For Frecce and Intercity services, a fare refund is possible up until the scheduled departure time, and for regional trains up until midnight on the previous day. Travellers are advised to allow sufficient time buffer and to check the status of their connection in advance with Trenitalia, Italo or RFI.<\/p>\n\n There are no reports of additional cancellations on the ferry routes to the island groups or across the Strait of Messina; the shipping companies’ regular summer timetables remain in effect until the end of September. No current changes to ZTL regulations or new road closures are known for the reporting period.<\/p>\n\n The INGV Osservatorio Etneo raised the VONA aviation warning code back to the highest level, red, on 6 September at around 1:30 pm Italian time, after it had stood at orange during the morning. The cause is an ongoing ash emission from the summit craters; according to official information, no pronounced, large ash cloud had formed at the time of the report. On the morning of 7 September, Catania airport’s operator initially limited the number of landings to a maximum of 5 per hour until 10:30 am because the red VONA level remained in effect; travellers with flights to or from Catania should check the status of their connection with their airline at short notice. The current unrest is linked to a longer phase of heightened activity: after the long-dormant Northeast Crater began producing lava fountains again at the end of December 2025 following around 28 years of rest, the Voragine and Northeast craters alternated through several eruptive phases over the course of 2026, most recently with the eruptive phase from 6 to 26 August that was officially declared over on 26 August, and the separate series of ash emissions registered again since 1 September. Continuously updated details on the Etna situation, including all official comunicati and VONA reports, can be found in the Etna live ticker<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n According to the official daily notice (avviso) from Protezione Civile Sicilia (No. 196 of 6 September, valid for 7 September), the pre-alert level (Preallerta) for wildfire danger remains in effect in several provinces, with a medium risk rating in Agrigento, Caltanissetta and Catania and a low rating in Enna and Messina. This is a noticeable easing compared with the red alert level that had applied in several provinces during the first week of September.<\/p>\n\n The lower forecast level does not mean, however, that the situation is already under control everywhere: on 5 and 6 September, the fire brigade, forestry rangers and civil protection responded to vegetation fires in practically every part of the region. In detail:<\/p>\n\n The current series fits into what has overall been a difficult wildfire season: by the end of August 2026, around 95,000 hectares of vegetation had already burned nationwide, significantly more than the 2006\u20132025 average for the same point in the year, a substantial share of it in Sicily. The season also ended in early September with a fatality: a 26-year-old from Ciminna in the province of Palermo died on 1 September from severe burns he had sustained on 27 August while trying to protect his home and the surrounding fields from a fire.<\/p>\n\n Dry conditions and wind can still change the situation at short notice; current values for each province are available via Protezione Civile Sicilia.<\/p>\n\n A stable area of high pressure is bringing mostly sunny, calm weather on 7 September, with light to moderate winds and generally calm seas. In the Catania plain and the western Trapani area, highs of around 36 to 38 degrees are possible, while coastal areas are typically a few degrees cooler. No current severe weather warnings are in effect for Sicily.<\/p>\n\n On 7 and 8 September, Mistretta in the Nebrodi celebrates its most important festival of the year, the Festa della Madonna della Luce. At its centre is a procession in which the statue of the Madonna is accompanied by two larger-than-life giant figures: Kronos, who carries a sword, and Mithia, who holds ears of wheat and wildflowers. The figures stem from a local legend and have been a fixed part of the town’s identity for generations. On the first day, the image of the Madonna is brought into the town and meets the two giants there, who then accompany it on its way to the main church; on the second day, the actual procession moves through the streets of the old town and ends with a traditional bonfire that echoes the theme of light. Anyone wanting to follow the procession should arrive early because of the narrow lanes of the historic old town and limited parking, and should expect traffic restrictions in the immediate procession area.<\/p>\n\n In the fishing village of Marzamemi near Pachino, the seventh edition of the international Marzamemi Cinefest film festival runs until 10 September. The 2026 edition puts the sea centre stage and is dedicated to the memory of free-diver Enzo Maiorca, who died in 2016, came from the Syracuse region, and set multiple depth records during his lifetime. Besides film screenings, the programme includes talks, exhibitions and musical contributions; on 8 September, an event on bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean is planned at the Palazzo dei Principi di Villadorata, followed by a documentary screening. Marzamemi is a small, historic village with narrow lanes and limited parking on the edge of town; evening events can be expected to draw significantly higher visitor numbers, so an early arrival is recommended.<\/p>\n\n From 18 to 27 September, San Vito Lo Capo hosts the 29th edition of the Cous Cous Fest, one of Sicily’s best-known culinary festivals. The festival combines cooking shows, tastings and encounters with chefs from various Mediterranean countries with beach concerts and an exhibition area for the participating countries. Access to the grounds, the beach concerts and the exhibition area is free; individual cooking shows and tastings are ticketed. Travellers wishing to visit the town during this period should expect significantly heavier traffic and fully booked accommodation, and should plan ahead.<\/p>\n\n In parallel, several other Marian festivals traditionally take place around 8 to 10 September in various parts of the region, for example in Tindari, Gibilmanna and along the Milicia coast.
