Island Hopping in Sicily

In short: Several very different island groups lie around Sicily. You can’t combine them all in one trip – they’re far apart and have their own ports. Plan a separate chapter for each group: the Aeolian Islands from Milazzo (northeast), the Aegadian Islands from Trapani (west), Ustica from Palermo, Pantelleria, and the Pelagie Islands (Lampedusa/Linosa) far to the south. The Island Groups at a Glance

Aeolian Islands (from Milazzo): the classic island-hopping region – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – with Lipari as the central hub, the volcanic islands Vulcano and Stromboli, green Salina, glamorous Panarea, and the remote Filicudi and Alicudi. Aegadian Islands (from Trapani): quickly reached, ideal even as a day trip. Favignana is flat and bike-friendly, Levanzo tiny and quiet, Marettimo the most unspoiled.

Ustica (from Palermo): a single island, a mecca for divers and snorkellers thanks to its marine protected area – calm and easy to get around.

Pantelleria (from Trapani or by flight): volcanic, wind-swept, with thermal springs and its distinctive dammusi architecture. The ferry crossing is longer; many people fly instead.

Pelagie Islands – Lampedusa & Linosa (from Porto Empedocle or by flight): far to the south, geographically closer to Africa. Lampedusa is known for its beaches and clear water – given the distance, more a trip in its own right than a side trip.

• Hydrofoils (Liberty Lines): fast and frequent, but passengers only and weather-dependent – sailings are cancelled in wind and rough seas.
• Car ferries (Siremar/Caronte & Tourist): slower, but take vehicles; reduced in winter.
• Season: frequent sailings in summer, far fewer connections in winter – check timetables carefully outside the season.

Planning Tips

• Leave the car at the mainland port (e.g. a guarded car park in Milazzo or Trapani).
• Plan the return crossing with a buffer – don’t book a tight flight on your departure day.
• Pack light – more practical on hydrofoils and at small ports.
• Day trip vs. overnight stay: the Aegadian Islands and Vulcano work as a day trip; the Aeolian Islands are worth several days.
• Don’t mix groups: the Aeolian and Aegadian Islands lie at opposite ends of Sicily.
