Etna has been in a sustained eruptive phase since August 6, 2026. On August 13, 2026, the Protezione Civile Sicilia therefore activated the operational ALLARME phase with a complete closure of the Zona Sommitale (summit zone); the alert level has since been raised and lowered several times. The lower and middle areas (Rifugio Sapienza, cable car) were not affected. We deliberately don’t state the day’s current alert level and access situation as a fixed figure here, but instead refer you to our continuously updated live ticker on the 2026 eruption phase as well as the Protezione Civile Sicilia as the primary source. Pickup at your accommodation in the Taormina area (also Giardini Naxos, Castelmola, Letojanni; meeting points are organized for other locations). After about an hour’s drive to the fly-camp on Etna’s north side, the helicopter takes off and glides over the historic lava flows of 1911, 1923 and 2002 up to the summit craters at around 3,350 m – passing the Volcanological Observatory (2,800 m) and the northeast rift. A naturalist guide (geologist, volcanologist, or forestry/agriculture expert) then leads you through old forests and extinct craters and into a lava cave (helmet and lamp included). South or North Side?
South side (Rifugio Sapienza): the tourist-developed access point with a cable car (Funivia dell’Etna), 4×4 buses, parking and places to eat. The cable car alone currently costs about €54 (round trip, adults), the combination of cable car + 4×4 jeep with guide up to around 2,750 m about €78. Well connected from Catania – also by bus. This is where to start if you want a comfortable way up.
North side (Piano Provenzana): quieter, less developed, reachable from Linguaglossa. Appealing for hikers and anyone avoiding the crowds. Public transport links are weaker here – a car is clearly the better choice.
Altitude Zones & Rules
The lower and middle areas are freely accessible. For the upper crater region, the rule is: access only with an authorized mountain guide (e.g. Gruppo Guide Alpine Etna Sud or Nord). The legal basis on the south side is the ordinance of the Comune di Nicolosi: from about 2,500 m elevation, accompaniment by an authorized mountain guide is required, above 2,750 m access generally ends, and a safety distance of at least 1,500 m from active craters must be maintained. During the current eruptive phase, the actual limit may lie even lower – the exact altitude cutoff shifts depending on current volcanic activity, so there’s no fixed figure for where access “ends.” What matters are the day’s current directives from Parco dell’Etna and the authorities. Guided tours are not generally required for the whole mountain, only for the upper, active zones.

Getting There
- By car: from Catania via Nicolosi and the SP92 to Rifugio Sapienza (parking available). Moderate driving time, but a mountain road.
- By bus: AST scheduled bus from Catania (Piazza Giovanni XXIII), departure 8:15 am, arrival at Rifugio Sapienza around 10:15 am; return departure from Rifugio Sapienza at 4:30 pm. Once daily in each direction, except December 25, January 1, August 15 and Easter Sunday; ticket about €6.60 (round trip, available on board). Check timetables with the operator in advance.
- North side: via Linguaglossa to Piano Provenzana, practically only worthwhile by car.
Best Time for Etna
Spring (May–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal: pleasant temperatures for the ascent, clearer visibility. In high summer it’s hot below but still cool and windy up top – start early.
