Market in Marzamemi: Mercatino Artigianale & Opening Hours

Marzamemi: Piazza Regina Margherita and old tonnara in the fishing village on Sicily’s southeast coast
Market in Marzamemi

Marzamemi does not have a traditional food weekly market, but a seasonal Mercatino Artigianale – a craft market in Via Santa Chiara, held every evening and only from 15 July to 15 September. It sells handmade items and souvenirs, not food for the weekly shop. Anyone looking for fresh produce should head to Noto or Pachino.

Quick Facts: Mercatino Artigianale di Marzamemi
  • Time: daily approx. 5:00pm–midnight (season 15 Jul–15 Sep)
  • Location: Via Santa Chiara

What this market is – and what it isn’t

Marzamemi is an old tonnara village with just a few hundred residents; a dedicated weekly market for fruit, vegetables and fish simply wouldn’t be viable here. Instead, the municipality of Pachino sets up a mercatino artigianale every summer: an evening market with crafts and souvenirs geared towards holidaymakers. If you’re expecting a Sicilian food market, this isn’t it – if you’re after a stroll after dinner, it’s a good fit.

Season, time and location

The market runs from 15 July to 15 September, daily from about 5pm to midnight, in Via Santa Chiara in the village centre. Stall spaces are re-allocated every year: for the 2026 season, 19 spaces were awarded, 10 to registered craftspeople and 9 to hobbyists with self-made work – allocation ran through an expression of interest in July followed by a draw. The market is therefore small and its line-up changes from year to year.

What’s sold

Typical items include ceramics, jewellery, small wood, driftwood and shell art, printed textiles, soaps and illustrations – plus the usual holiday souvenirs. Prices are in the souvenir range, and there’s little haggling. For olive oil, capers, wine or preserved tuna from the region, the delicatessens around Piazza Regina Margherita and businesses in Pachino are a better bet than the market stalls.

Getting there, the ZTL and parking

The historic village centre is closed to car traffic in summer: in 2026 the Zona a Traffico Limitato has applied since 8 June, initially from 11am to midnight, with extended evening hours from late June. This affects, among other areas, Piazza Regina Margherita, the Cortile Arabo and the lanes around Via Santa Chiara – in other words, exactly the market area. Driving in and parking there isn’t possible during market hours; several paid car parks on the edge of the village are a few minutes’ walk from the centre. In August and on weekends, they regularly fill up in the early evening.

The market isn’t the only thing happening in the evening

Alongside the Mercatino, two events with considerably more substance take place in Marzamemi. Artieri, the festival of arts and crafts, runs in 2026 from 1 to 17 August, daily from 6pm to 1am, in the historic tonnara on Piazza Regina Margherita – curated craftwork ranging from designer ceramics to jewellery and design, plus free workshops, free admission. And the Festival del Cinema di Frontiera shows open-air films every July on Piazza Regina Margherita; in 2026 it ran from 20 to 26 July. If you have the choice, plan your Marzamemi evening around these dates rather than the market stalls.

If you’re really looking for a market to shop at

The nearest proper weekly market is in Noto, Mondays from 8am to 1pm at Piazza Risorgimento – about half an hour’s drive away and easy to combine with a visit to the Baroque town. Closer by is the farmers’ market in Pachino, Thursdays from 8am to 1pm at Piazza Vittorio Emanuele: small, but with produce from local growers, including the well-known Pachino tomatoes. Both are morning events – the Mercatino in Marzamemi is evenings only.
