Good to Know

Frequently Asked Questions About Sicily

Which region of Sicily suits me?
The northwest around Palermo is urban and rich in culture, the west (Trapani) offers salt pans, islands and beach towns like San Vito Lo Capo. The southeast (Syracuse, Val di Noto) combines antiquity and Baroque, and the east around Catania offers Etna and good transport connections.
When is the best time to visit Sicily?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. May, June, September and October suit cities and hiking well. Beach holidays work from June to September; July and August are hot, expensive and crowded. In high summer, plan for heat and wildfire risk.
Is a rental car worth it in Sicily?
For the interior, remote beaches and flexible touring, usually yes. In Palermo and Catania a car is more of a hindrance (traffic, ZTL zones, parking). For a city trip plus coastal towns with rail access, you often don’t need one.
How do I get from Catania to Taormina without a car?
By regional train (Trenitalia) to Taormina-Giardini; the station is down on the coast, from where you continue by bus or taxi into the centre — the cable car doesn’t start at the station but separately connects Mazzarò with the upper town. Alternatively, some buses run more directly closer to the centre. Check timetables seasonally.
