Cefalù Weekly Market: Market Day & Opening Hours

Cefalù: old town with Norman cathedral below the La Rocca cliff on Sicily’s north coast
Market in Cefalù

The Cefalù weekly market takes place on Saturday mornings in Via Pietragrossa, year-round, roughly from 8am to 1pm. On sale are fruit and vegetables, food, clothing, household goods and regional produce. This is an everyday market for local shoppers rather than tourists – and it is deliberately located outside the narrow, largely car-free old town.

Quick Facts: Cefalù Weekly Market
  • Market day: Saturday
  • Time: Sat 8:00am–1:00pm
  • Location: Via Pietragrossa

What’s sold at the market

The Saturday market is the weekly shop for the town and its neighbouring villages. At its core are seasonal fruit and vegetables, plus stalls selling cheese, cured meats, olives, dried fruit and nuts, and fish from the surrounding area. A large part of the site, however, belongs to the non-food section: clothing, shoes, fabrics, household goods, tools and plants. Anyone looking for typically Sicilian souvenirs – olive oil, capers, pistachio products, wine – will find a better selection in the old town’s shops; this market is about quantity and price, not fine food.

The best time to go

As a rule of thumb, the market runs Saturdays from 8am to 1pm. It’s liveliest between 9 and 11am; after that the first traders start packing up, and by around midday the selection is noticeably smaller. If you want to combine the market with the rest of the day, plan it as a morning activity and keep the afternoon free for the old town and the beach. Small-denomination cash is handy, as card payment isn’t possible at many stalls.

Getting there and parking – the market is outside the ZTL

Via Pietragrossa is not in the historic centre but somewhat outside it. That’s an advantage for visitors: you don’t have to drive into the narrow, largely traffic-calmed old town between the cathedral and the harbour, but can head straight to the market area. On Saturday mornings, though, the surrounding area gets correspondingly busy – arriving early pays off. If you’re staying in town anyway, walk; if you’re arriving by car, the usual alternatives are along the Lungomare and near the train station. Cefalù is also easy to reach from Palermo by regional train, in which case you don’t need a car for the market at all.

What the market isn’t

Cefalù has no historic market in the style of Ballarò or Capo in Palermo, and no covered market hall. Anyone expecting street-food atmosphere, market criers and alleys packed with stalls will be disappointed – this is a modern weekly market on open ground. Its appeal lies elsewhere: you see what’s currently being harvested in the region, listen to how prices are negotiated, and pay normal prices rather than an old-town markup.

Combine it with your market visit

Saturday morning combines well with the town’s must-see sights: the Norman cathedral with its mosaics is just a few minutes away, as are the medieval Lavatoio washhouse and the old town lanes down to the harbour. Climbing La Rocca is more pleasant in the morning heat than in the afternoon – if you want to do both in one day, tackle the rock first and the market afterwards. For a full day inland, the Madonie mountains and Castelbuono are good options; the drive there takes around an hour.

More market days in the Province of Palermo

Around Cefalù, almost every weekday has its own market: Termini Imerese holds its market near the harbour on Fridays, Bagheria on Wednesdays in Via Bagnera, Carini on Tuesdays, and Monreale on Sundays in the municipal car park. In Palermo itself, the historic markets of Ballarò, Capo and Vucciria run almost daily, along with the Campagna Amica farmers’ market in Via Notarbartolo. The full overview by weekday is on the province page linked at the end of this page.
