Weekly Market in Agrigento: Market Day & Opening Hours

Agrigento’s weekly market takes place on Friday mornings at Piazzale Ugo La Malfa – the large square below the old town that many locals simply call “il mercato”. Access is from Via Esseneto, Via Manzoni and Via Ugo La Malfa. Fruit and vegetables, cheese, cured meats and wine are sold alongside clothing, household goods and plants. If you prefer to buy directly from producers: on Saturdays there are also two Campagna Amica farmers’ markets at other locations.

Quick Facts: Agrigento Weekly Market

  • Time: Fri 8:00am–1:00pm

What’s sold at the market

The Friday market is a classic Sicilian mercato settimanale: not a gourmet event, but the town’s weekly shop. The bulk of it is seasonal fruit and vegetables – tomatoes, courgettes, melons and the first figs in early summer, citrus from the surrounding area in winter. Alongside these are stalls selling cheese, cured meats, olives, dried fruit and nuts, plus a large section of clothing, shoes, household goods, fabrics and plants. Prices are rarely marked – goods are sold by weight, and if you only want a small amount, it’s best to say so directly.

The best time to go

As a rule of thumb, Friday morning from about 8am to 1pm. Between 9 and 11am the market is at its fullest and liveliest – that’s the time to come for atmosphere and selection. If you prefer it quieter, come shortly after the stalls open. Around midday the first traders start packing up – prices for remaining stock often drop, but the choice is already much smaller by then. Cash in small notes is useful, as card payment isn’t possible at many stalls.

Getting there and parking

Piazzale Ugo La Malfa lies below the historic centre. On market day the square itself is entirely taken up by stalls, so parking there isn’t possible. If you come by car, park in the surrounding streets and walk the last stretch – the area fills up quickly in the morning. The three official access points are on Via Esseneto, Via Manzoni and Via Ugo La Malfa. From the old town centre the route leads downhill – the way back is more comfortable by bus or taxi, especially with full shopping bags.

Public holidays and exceptions

If Friday falls on a public holiday, the market isn’t automatically guaranteed: in 2024 it was cancelled outright for All Saints’ Day, and in 2026 it was moved by municipal order to Sunday, 3 May, because of 1 May. Conversely, in the run-up to Christmas there are occasionally additional Sunday dates to support local retail. Such changes are usually only announced at short notice via the municipality and local press – if your travel day falls on a public holiday, it’s worth checking the Comune di Agrigento’s announcements the day before.

The Saturday alternative: farmers’ markets

If you miss Friday, there are two options on Saturday – both producer markets run by the Campagna Amica association, so smaller and food-only: one at Piazzale Ugo La Malfa (about 7:30am–1pm), the second down by the sea in San Leone on Lungomare Falcone e Borsellino (about 7am–1pm). For olive oil, cheese, honey and vegetables straight from the producer, they’re a better bet than the big Friday market – but for bustle and variety, Friday remains the first choice.
