In short: Milazzo is a port town on a narrow headland on Sicily’s north coast and the most important mainland gateway to the Aeolian Islands. A large castle towers above the town, along with a compact old town, long beaches and the Capo Milazzo nature reserve. One night is enough for a pure stopover; 2–3 days are worthwhile for the town and the cape.

Getting there & transport
Year-round connections run from the centrally located harbour to all seven Aeolian Islands – Liberty Lines (fast hydrofoils, no vehicles) and Siremar (slower car ferries). Vulcano and Lipari are reached fastest. Check schedules and prices before departure and book ahead in high season.
By car, Milazzo is reached via the A20 (Messina–Palermo). The train station (Palermo–Messina line) is about 3 km outside town – plan for a city bus or taxi to the harbour if you have luggage. More on public transport in our article Public transport in Sicily.
Frequently asked questions
How do you get from Milazzo to the Aeolian Islands?
Year-round hydrofoils (Liberty Lines, no vehicles) and car ferries (Siremar) run from the central harbour to all seven islands. Vulcano and Lipari are reached fastest. Check schedules before departure.
Is it worth staying overnight in Milazzo?
Yes. If you want to reach the islands early, this avoids travel stress; the castle, old town and Capo Milazzo also justify a stay of 2–3 days.
How do you get to Milazzo without a car?
By train on the Palermo–Messina line to Milazzo station (about 30 min. from Messina), then a city bus or taxi for the roughly 3 km to the harbour.
Does Milazzo have nice beaches?
There are decent, mostly pebbly beaches (Ponente, Baia del Tono) with views of the islands. For a pure sandy-beach holiday, however, Milazzo is not a top destination.
