Akrai (Palazzolo Acreide): Greek Theatre & the Santoni

In short: The Parco archeologico di Akrai near the baroque UNESCO town of Palazzolo Acreide is one of Sicily’s best-preserved small Greek excavation sites. Its centrepiece is a well-preserved Greek theatre; add to that ancient stone quarries, early Christian catacombs and – a little further out – the Santoni, twelve rock reliefs of the goddess Cybele. Plan on 1 to 1.5 hours for the site, more with the old town.

History & Background

According to the ancient historian Thucydides, Akrai was the oldest daughter colony of Syracuse, founded in 664 BC. Its position on the plateau between the Tellaro and Anapo valleys was strategic: Akrai controlled the hinterland and the routes to the south coast. The theatre and bouleuterion date from the Hellenistic period; a temple had already stood on the acropolis since the 6th century BC.

The city remained inhabited in Roman times, and in the early Christian era catacombs were cut into the quarry walls. The site was identified in the 16th century by Tommaso Fazello; systematic excavations began in the 19th century under Baron Gabriele Judica. The baroque town of Palazzolo Acreide itself is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site „Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto“.

Planning Your Visit & Getting There

By car from Syracuse it’s about 45 minutes (roughly 40 km), from Catania a good hour. Without a car, AST buses run from Syracuse to Palazzolo Acreide (via Canicattini Bagni); service is sparse, with almost no buses on Sundays and holidays – check schedules in advance (see Buses & trains in Sicily). For the remote Santoni, a rental car or a guided tour is practically essential. The open site offers little shade – bring water and a hat.

Best Time to Visit

Palazzolo Acreide sits at roughly 670–700 m and is noticeably more pleasant than the coast in summer. Spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October) are ideal; winter can be cool and windy.

In town itself, the Casa Museo Antonino Uccello and the Museo Judica are worthwhile. Nearby: the rock necropolis of Pantalica, the baroque town of Noto, and Syracuse with the Neapolis Archaeological Park.
