Marina di Ragusa: Beach Town, Marina & Travel Tips

Wetter wird geladen …

Marina di Ragusa in one sentence: a popular seaside resort on Sicily’s south coast (Province of Ragusa) with a long sandy beach, a lively seafront promenade and a modern marina – busy and bustling in high summer, considerably quieter in the shoulder seasons. Ideal as a beach and base location for the baroque southeast (Ragusa, Modica, Scicli) and the Montalbano filming locations – less so for anyone looking for secluded coves or mountain views. Plan on a beach day to several days as a base. A car is useful for the surrounding area, but not necessary in the town itself.

Marina di Ragusa lies on Sicily’s south coast and belongs to the municipality of Ragusa, about 20 kilometres inland. Over the decades, a small fishing and loading port has developed into one of the province’s best-known seaside resorts – with a wide sandy beach, a long promenade and a well-developed marina that keeps the town lively outside the bathing season too.

The character varies greatly by season: in high summer (July/August) the town is a lively beach destination with packed beaches, an evening passeggiata along the promenade and busy restaurants; in the shoulder seasons, Marina di Ragusa feels quieter and more relaxed, with many businesses open on reduced hours. Anyone looking for Mediterranean summer life will get their money’s worth here – anyone expecting peace and empty beaches should choose the off-peak times.

As a base, Marina di Ragusa is attractive because the baroque towns of the Val di Noto are within easy reach: Ragusa, Modica and Scicli make good day trips, as does nearby Punta Secca with the house on the beach known from the TV series “Commissario Montalbano”. Half a beach day is enough for the town itself – as a base for the region, plan on several days.

The highlights in detail

The sandy beach

The biggest argument for Marina di Ragusa is its long, pale sandy beach with a gently sloping entry into the water – which makes it especially attractive for families. The beach is divided into freely accessible sections and paid lidos with sun loungers, umbrellas and service. Honestly: in high summer it gets crowded here, free spots near the water are then limited, and there’s little natural shade – it’s worth arriving early or using a lido. In the shoulder seasons you’ll have considerably more space.

Seafront promenade (Lungomare)

The promenade along the beach is the town’s social hub. During the day it’s a strolling strip along the water; in the evening it becomes the gathering point for a typical Italian passeggiata, with gelaterias, bars and cafés. Anyone looking for summer buzz is in the right place – anyone wanting peace and quiet will quickly notice that things get lively and sometimes loud in August.

Marina (Porto Turistico)

The modern marina has given Marina di Ragusa an appeal beyond the pure bathing season. Restaurants and bars have sprung up around the berths, and the area is well suited to a stroll in the late afternoon or evening. It gives the town a slightly more sophisticated flair than the plain beach stretches – without Marina di Ragusa thereby becoming an exclusive, upscale destination.

Beaches

The main beach of Marina di Ragusa is wide, sandy and shallow – ideal for swimming with children. Along the coast, freely accessible beach sections (spiaggia libera) alternate with organised lidos. Further along the coast to the west and east you’ll find further seaside resorts and beaches in the Province of Ragusa; for an overview of Sicilian beaches in general, see our page Sicily beaches. An honest note: Marina di Ragusa is a classic seaside resort, not a hidden gem for secluded coves – anyone looking for the latter is better off on other stretches of coast.

Getting there

Car: the most flexible way to get there is by car – from Catania airport it’s around an hour and a half to two hours depending on traffic. Airport: closer is Comiso (CIY), about 25–30 km away – but with a smaller range of flights than Catania. Bus: there are bus connections to the surrounding area, especially to Ragusa – the service is season-dependent and more frequent in summer. Train: Marina di Ragusa itself has no train station – the nearest rail connection is in Ragusa, from where you continue by bus or car. Overview: Getting to Sicily.

Where to stay (areas)

  • Near the beach / promenade: everything on foot, right in the middle of summer life – lively in the evening, sometimes noisy.
  • By the marina: somewhat quieter than the main promenade, with restaurants nearby.
  • Edge of town / towards Ragusa: easier parking, a good base for excursions by car.

Food & enjoyment

Along the promenade and marina you’ll find bars, gelaterias and restaurants focused on fish and seafood – fitting for a coastal location. Add to that the specialities of the Province of Ragusa, such as Ragusano DOP cheese and the southeast’s baroque sweet and pastry tradition (in Modica, the well-known Cioccolato di Modica). We only give concrete, verified restaurant recommendations after editorial review – in high summer, it’s worth booking ahead for popular places. Vegetarians are well catered for with caponata, grilled vegetables and antipasti.

Common mistakes

  • Visiting Marina di Ragusa in August and being surprised by crowded beaches and little shade.

  • Arriving late at the beach and no longer finding a spot near the water.
  • Travelling without a car and then struggling to reach the surrounding area (Ragusa, Modica, Scicli).

Alternatives nearby

  • Punta Secca – small fishing village with the Montalbano house, quieter than Marina di Ragusa.
